Strategic review and planning of services for vulnerable children

Case study: Review of services for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the north Midlands

Client needs: PSI was commissioned to look specifically at the accessibility of the services available and eligibility of children with ASD for them. A review of the current referral pathways, service performance and value for money issues was also required.

What we did: This comprehensive review involved analysis of the current policy and practice of services involved in working with children with a diagnosis of ASD and their families; scrutiny of management information; reference to local and national effective strategy in this area and reference to the legislative and local authority targets set by each agency involved. A core part of the work involved interviews with stakeholders across Health and Children’s Services, parents and carers and young people with ASD.

Outcomes: Successful features of the service were highlighted and built on in the recommendations for change and development. Detailed work was planned on improving services in three main areas:- transition from education to adult services: the involvement of children and young people and the refining of referral pathways.
